Upon being told I was allowed to do a post dedicated to my ultimate space nerd hero The Doctor, my reaction was
I LOVE The Doctor, I have done ever since I heard the words (no not run) but… now what were those words again-
In 2017 my life changed when Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Doctor and whilst doing my final research project at uni (lets call it a disse because it’s easier to understand how much effort has gone into it), I changed my original title/piece to one that celebrated the badass ladies of the theatre industry with a maWHOsive reflection on Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor.
So it really is no surprise that this is going to be a lil bit of a nerdy post today- sorry (not sorry I love Jodie)
Where are we? Right I suppose if you have no clue who the Doctor is, and if that’s the case I can only assume you are from the planet Ranskoor Av Hol, sister to Ranskoor Av Kolos but not as pretty. If that’s you ARE from there then hi! I didn’t mean what I said about your planet- I love it! Did I mention I love the crimson waterfalls?
But you really do need to know about The Doctor. The Doctor is a time-traveller from the planet Gallifrey, she is a Time Lord- they don’t have petty hang ups over gender there, so despite being in a female form her name is The Doctor and she is lording over time and space as we speak. Seriously, she never takes a break and that’s even when she lands on Sunday’s. But she has been avoiding those lately.
She’s lived a long life and not always had happy moments, in the 20’s you’ll find her fighting a wasp with Agatha Christie, lovely lady- I’m on her bowling team with Jane Austen (Jane wins all the time, I’m starting to think she cheats).
Travelling with the Doctor is like travelling alongside a sun. She’s so bright and powerful it is blinding and if you get too close you can be burnt. She also knows pi to like the end? I didn’t think it was possible but we were bored one night and well, she’s really clever. And she loves biscuits so never leave any around because she will eat the packet.
So how could I talk nothing but the Doctor and not be a little bit burnt?
Well it’s easy. The legend that is the Doctor is known throughout the universe, the oncoming storm to those tin cans that try their luck at destroying Earth every few years. The saviour of worlds to others.
The Doctor is currently holding the form of a blonde woman who looks like she’s from Sol 3, known to most of us as Earth. Not New Earth, that’s not for another couple million years, give or take an apple or a banana. She has recently fought off the Daleks a couple of months ago (they tried to take over GCHQ), and she has more than proven she is still the ultimate badass warrior hero nerd that she has always been. So when you next look to the stars, smile and whisper her name, she’ll hear you; one of her regenerations had really big ears so that all of the forms can hear when you call out Doctor. The Doctor is really protective of Sol 3 y’know?
To me, The Doctor is my beginning. Well over 10 years ago, I made the decision that I would one day play the Doctor. This was back when David Tennant had only been in one episode. I didn’t understand then that gender was an issue with some roles, I just knew I wanted to be a cooky alien travelling around in a TARDIS next stop everywhere.
And now I have finished uni, still travel around the universe like a cooky alien but my next stop is acting. I have wanted to act since the moment I watched the sci-fi show that is Doctor Who so I owe everything I am today to that decision I made all those years ago.
Thank you Doctor, for everything.
